The Raising of
Lazarus from a late 15th century (c. 1480) Book of Hours (likely Paris).
Recto: Leaf features Christ before a group of onlookers as Lazarus,
dressed in a white burial gown, rises from the grave. The figures stand
before a landscape of green fields and trees and a blue hill in the
background. Surrounding the miniature on three sides is a lovely ornate
border of red and blue flowers, green leaves, blue & gold acanthus
leaves on a gold and white background. A blue & lavender butterfly
adorns the margin. Below the painting are 6 lines of text written in
brown ink. An impressively large 4-line initial “D” opens the text
painted in mauve on a blue background with gold decoration. 1 single
line initial in blue and gold. Recto contains 15 lines of text written
in dark brown ink. 7 1-line initials blue & red or gold & black. The
text is the Psalm 114. A lovely depiction of this famous scene.

| The text
in Latin: Placebo Domino.
Dilexi, quoniam exaudiet Dominus: vocem orationis meae. Quia
inclinavit aurem suam mihi: et in diebus meis invocabo. Circumdederunt
me dolores mortis: pericula inferni invenerunt me. Tribulationem,
et dolorem inveni: et nomen Domini invocavi. Domine, libera animam
meam, misericors Dominus, et iustus: et Deus noster miseretur.
Custodiens parvulos Dominus: humiliatus sum, et liberavit me.
Convertere anima mea in requiem tuam: quia Dominus benefecit tibi.
Quia eripuit animam meam de morte: oculos meos a lacrymis, pedes meos a
lapsu. Placebo Domino: in regione vivorum..
I will please. I have
loved, because our Lord: will hear the voice of my prayer. Because
He hath inclined His ear to me: and in my days I will call upon Him.
The sorrows of death have compassed me: and the pains of hell have found
me. I have found tribulation, and sorrow: and I called on the name
of our Lord. O Lord, deliver my soul, merciful Lord, and just: and
our God hath mercy. Our Lord keepeth little ones: I was humbled,
and He hath delivered me. Turn O my soul into Thy rest: because
our Lord hath done good to thee. Because He hath delivered my soul
from death: my eyes from tears, my feet from sliding. I will
please our Lord in the country of the living (English translation).
The story of the raising of
Lazarus is from the Gospel of John. According to the Gospel,
Lazarus' sisters sent for Jesus to heal their ailing brother. When
Jesus arrived, Lazarus had already been four days in his tomb.
Jesus assured Martha, one of the sisters, that Lazarus would rise.
Before a crowd of mourners, Jesus opened the tomb and asked Lazarus to
come out. Upon the request, Lazarus rose from his grave and exited
the tomb. |
