Exceptionally clean manuscript leaf from medieval prayer book
beautifully scribed in Dutch in the mid 15th century (c. 1450) 21
lines of text on each side written in black ink with red rubric in a
lovely gothic script on vellum. 1 large double line initial in red
and numerous single line initials in red and blue. The
leaf is an example of the beautifully written leaves produced at the
Augustinian Convent of St. Agnes in Delft. The manuscript is from
a prayer book scribed entirely by a female scribe. Because so few
women were taught to read and write in the fifteenth century, it is rare to find a medieval
manuscript written by a female scribe. The leaf is finely written and
particularly bright.
