Leaf from a German Antiphonal (c. 1450). Hand-scribed with black
ink in Latin in a monastic gothic hand on vellum. 7 staves on each
side of 4 lines each in red ink. Verso contains 2 large polychrome
capitals “Initial C” and “Initial S.” Recto contains 3 minor initials
Contains the music for The Common of Two or More Martyrs.
Antiphonals were books containing the sung portions of the Divine
Office. The 4-line stave was used until around 1500 when the 5-line
stave became the norm.
