Large miniature depicting “the Harrowing of Hell” from a 15th century
Book of Hours (southern France). The miniature shows Christ at center
with his feet upon a golden ball. On the left and right of the central
figure are two angels playing trumpets. On the ground to the right and
left of Christ are two worshipping saints (likely Mary and John).
Between the worshippers, the dead ascend from their graves. The image,
painted on vellum, includes, blues, reds, greens, mauve, and gold. An
ornate border surrounds the leaf on all sides decorated in a floral
motif of thistles, roses, and acanthus leaves as well as other flowers
painted in blue, red, pink, green, and gold. Beneath the image are 6
lines of text in Latin written in a brown-black ink with red rubrics. An
impressively large 5 line initial “D” opens the text painted in mauve on
a brilliant gold background, with a blue internal design. The text
is from Psalm 6. Recto contains 3 lines of text. A striking
miniature!
