Detail. Additional images below |
Remarkably bright and large miniature depicting the
presentation of Jesus at the Temple from a late 15th century northern
French Book of Hours (possibly Paris or Rouen) painted on vellum. On the
right side of the leaf behind an alter stands Simeon with the infant
Jesus in his arms under a red canopy. To the left, kneeling in the
foreground is Mary. Behind her are Joseph and three women, one of whom
holds a basket of birds and a candle. The artist use primarily blues,
reds and greens, in addition to yellows, browns, grays and gold.
Surrounding the miniature is a lovely border with red, blue, green, and
pink flowers, leaves, and acanthus leaves on a gold border. Beneath the
miniature are three lines of text. A large initial D opens the text
painted in white on a gold background with a large red rose in the
middle of the initial. Recto includes 18 lines of text in a brown-black
bastarda script in Latin with a 2 line initial written in gold on a blue
background. There is some minor smudging of the blue paint on recto and
a very small smudge verso, which minimally impacts the integrity of the
leaf . Truly, a bright and beautiful leaf!
