The
Requiem Mass from a 15th century French Prayer Book. 16 lines of
text on each side written in a gothic script on vellum. Leaf
contains 1 2-line initial in burnished gold, decorated with blue & red
paint and white tracery . 9 1-line initials in alternating
blue with red penwork or burnished gold with blue penwork.
Initials adjacent to margin contain elaborate penwork design extending
into margin.
Stunning border on each side on a gold background with a rich foliate
design of blue, red, and pink flowers. Three thick diagonal
stripes traverse each border in alternating blue and mauve with a gold
design. Recto in excellent condition with very minor smudging to
upper blank margin. Verso has some minor smudging to border and
staining blank margin. The Requiem or Requiem Mass is frequently
celebrated in the context of a funeral. The Mass has inspired
great musical compositions by Mozart, Verdi, and Fauré.
