Excerpt from Psalms 23 & 24 from a 15th century French psalter. 15 lines of text on each side written in a fine batarde hand in brown-black ink with red rubrics on vellum. 9 single line initials in alternating gold and red and blue. Lovely black and red penwork extends from several initials. Large 2-line initial "A" in burnished gold on a red & blue background with white tracery opens psalm 24. Lovely gold vines emanate from the large initial filling much of the left margin.

Innocens manibus et mundo corde qui non accepit in vano animam suam nec iuravit in dolo proximo suo. Hic accipiet benedictionem a Domino et misericordiam a Deo salvatore suo. Haec est generatio quaerentium eum quaerentium faciem Dei Iacob. Adtollite portas principes vestras et elevamini portae aeternales et introibit rex gloriae. Quis est iste rex gloriae Dominus fortis et potens Dominus potens in proelio. Adtollite portas principes vestras et elevamini portae aeternales et introibit rex gloriae. Quis est iste rex gloriae Dominus virtutum ipse est rex gloriae.

The innocent in hands, and clean of heart, who hath not taken his soul in vain, nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbour. He shall receive a blessing from the Lord, and mercy from God his Saviour. This is the generation of them that seek him, of them that seek the face of the God of Jacob. Lift up your gates, O ye princes, and be ye lifted up, O eternal gates: and the King of Glory shall enter in. Who is this King of Glory? the Lord who is strong and mighty: the Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your gates, O ye princes, and be ye lifted up, O eternal gates: and the King of Glory shall enter in. Ad te Domine levavi animam meam. Deus meus in te confido non erubescam. Neque inrideant me inimici mei etenim universi qui sustinent te non confundentur. Confundantur omnes iniqua agentes supervacue vias tuas Domine demonstra mihi et semitas tuas doce me. Dirige me in veritatem tuam et doce me quoniam tu es Deus salvator meus et te sustinui tota die.

To thee, O Lord, have I lifted up my soul. In thee, O my God, I put my trust; let me not be ashamed. Neither let my enemies laugh at me: for none of them that wait on thee shall be confounded. Let all them be confounded that act unjust things without cause. Shew, O Lord, Thy ways to me, and teach me Thy paths. Direct me in Thy truth, and teach me; for Thou art God my Saviour; and on Thee have I waited all the day long (English translation)
