Antiphonals were books containing the sung portions of the Divine
Office. The manuscript leaf offered here is large, typical of the
medieval book, so it could be shared by a choir.
Leaf from an Italian antiphonal
(c. 1500) on vellum in black ink with red rubrics. Recto contains
4 bars and music and 5 lines of lyrics. Verso contains 5 bars of
music and 5 lines of lyrics. Verso opens with a grand initial "S"
in mauve, green, blue, and yellow on a gold background with floral
ornamentation.
The chant presented on this leaf
is the "Stetit Angelus," the Offertory chant for the feast of St.
Michael, the Archangel. Some crinkling at edges.
