Beautiful leaf from an early 15th century (c. 1425)
breviary composed in a French scriptorium. The leaf contains a
portion of the Litany of the Saints (Litaniae Sanctorum), a sacred
prayer invoking the Trinity, the Virgin, angels, apostles, martyrs,
confessors, and virgins. 15 lines of text in dark brown script.
Verso contains 2 large double line and 2 single line initials in
burnished gold, blue and red. 1 line
filler in burnished gold, red, and blue with white tracery.
Recto contains 2 double line initials in burnished gold, blue and red.
The image here does not do the illumination justice; the gold lettering
is vibrant!

A portion of the text in Latin:
Ure igne Sancti Spíritus renes nostros et cor
nostrum, Dómine : ut tibi casto córpore serviamus, et mundo corde
placeámus.
Grant, O Lord, we pray thee, that the fire of
thy Holy Spirit may in such wise cleanse our reins and our hearts : that
we serving thee in pureness both of body and soul may be found an
acceptable people in thy sight (English translation).
